Belize Airport

Airport in Belize

What is the main airport in Belize?

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport is the main airport in Belize. It is located close to the Caribbean coast, 10 miles from Belize City, the largest city of Belize in a village called Ladyville. The airport is about 25 minutes driving to Belize City. The taxi has a fixed fare of 25 USD.

Belize has 18 national airports but only one international airport (Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport). Any flight arriving from any international destination outside Belize will fly into this airport. Whether you fly into Belize to get to San Pedro or to Ambergris Caye, you will arrive first at the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

The airport is at a height of 5 m (16 ft) over sea level so Ladyville, the airport and Belize City on the coast are at risk of serious flooding. For this reason, in the 70’s after a hurricane Hattie stroke and destroyed and flooded most of Belize City, Belize moved its capital to Belmopan. However, 56 years after Belmopan was created and declared the capital, Belize City remains the largest and busiest city in the country by far.

The airport of Belize was originally built in 1943 and named after Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, who started out as a journalist, became politician and then the national hero. He is called the Father of Democracy of Belize as Philip Goldson dedicated his life to making Belize a better place for all. He died in the year 2001.

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport is currently the seventh busiest airport in Central America even though it felt tiny to me. (I just arrived from London, via New York and Atlanta so the difference in size felt huge).

Services & Infrastructure

The airport has one runway length and 10 large aircraft parking slots. The Airport Terminal Building contains Terminals 1 and 2, International Arrival and Departure Halls, a Domestic Arrival Hall, restaurants, shops, duty free a banks and 4 ATMsNone of these ATMs worked with me.

I went to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 but I go the same error all the time. Yes, this was my arrival to Belize. By myself, trying 4 ATMs on a row (all those in the airport of Belize) and none worked. At the time I arrived the banks were closed. After speaking with some locals, eventually I decided to take a taxi heading towards Belize City as hopefully an ATM would work there….Hopefully?

The taxi stopped after 5 minutes in an ATM and finally this one worked. I did not forget the name of the bank. It was the Heritage bank, the only bank that would work with any of my two bank cards in Belize for the rest of my days there. Many visitors have his issue. The first thing that happened to me on my trip to Belize did thankfully not represent the rest of it. I had an amazing time in Belize! It’s mind-blowing!

Is there WiFi at the Belize Airport?
